What to expect

the experience

A session at Middle Sea is designed to be focused, calm, and productive.

No rush, no pressure—just a space built specifically for recording, where everything supports clarity, depth, and feel.

before the session

A great session usually starts before anyone walks in the door.

Coming in well rehearsed makes a big difference. When the parts and arrangements are already dialed in, we can spend our time capturing performances instead of working things out on the spot.

If you have demos, references, notes, lyrics, or chord charts, send them over in advance. It helps us get familiar with the material and be ready to go when you arrive.

If you’re working with a producer, we’re always happy to connect ahead of time and get aligned.

getting set up

At the start of the session, we take time to get everything sounding right.

That includes setting up instruments, dialing in tones, mic placement, headphone mixes, and session setup. Drums especially benefit from extra attention—tuning, positioning, and mic placement all play a big role in the final sound.

Taking the time upfront makes a noticeable difference. Once everything is dialed in, the rest of the session tends to move quickly and naturally.

tracking

From there, we move into recording.

Every project is a little different. Sometimes that means capturing a band live, other times it’s building things one layer at a time.

A common approach is to track instruments against a scratch vocal to establish the feel of the song. As we go, we’ll often begin shaping the track—tightening timing, refining parts, and building rough mixes so each pass gets closer to the final result.

In most cases, you’ll hear updated rough mixes along the way, with edits already in place. This helps guide decisions in real time and keeps the session moving forward with clarity.

The focus is always on capturing performances that feel right. As we go, we may begin shaping the track—tightening timing, refining parts, and building rough mixes so each pass gets closer to the final result. Additional editing and production work outside of scheduled session time is handled separately as needed.

overdubs & refinement

Once the foundation is in place, we move into anything that needs to be added or shaped.

That might mean re-tracking vocals after the instrumentation has been refined, adding harmonies or additional instruments, or focusing on specific sections.

Editing and refinement continue here as needed, always in service of the performance.

working with producers

We regularly work with outside producers and welcome them as part of the process.

They can lead the creative direction while we stay focused on capturing the performance and keeping things running smoothly. If you’re not sure whether to bring one in, we’re happy to talk it through.

reviewing the day

Throughout the session, we’ll listen back, make adjustments, and keep things moving forward.

By the end of the day, you’ll have a clear sense of what’s been captured and where things stand.

what happens next

Some projects wrap after tracking, others continue into deeper editing, production, or mixing.

You’ll typically leave the session with rough mixes that reflect the progress made during tracking, and we’ll talk through the best next step from there.

Session files are kept for a limited time, so it’s helpful to plan next steps soon after recording.
